Parent Council / Planning for Post-Secondary Meeting Feb 7 2012

The next Western parent council meeting is on Tuesday February 7th at 6:00PM - please join us to hear all the latest school updates from our Principal.

Planning for Post Secondary is the topic of our Special Presentation at 7:00PM in the school theatre for ALL students in grades 10, 11 and 12 and their parents. Members of our Guidance Department and a parent ambassador from Alberta Learning will present information on education and careeer planning, scholarships and where to learn more. Come and learn!

Refreshments will be served.

Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange

Are you interested in travelling to Europe this summer?  The Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange may be for you.

You will be paired up with a student of the same sex and roughly the same age in Europe (some other locations may also be available) in whose home you will spend 2 – 3 weeks.

In exchange that student will spend the same period of time in your home learning your customs and becoming acquainted with this area and your life.

You are not expected to learn another language as your paired student is expected to have some English skills, however you are encouraged to make an effort at the other language and in doing so become immersed in your paired students’ life and their culture.

Rotary acts only as the facilitator of the exchange to insure safety and compatibility. If you would like more details please see attached flyer and/or contact:

Interact Talent Show

The Western Interact Club will be hosting a Talent Show in the Theatre, during lunchtime on February 13th, 14th, and 15th (finals). Admission will consist of a one dollar donation. All money collected will go to the Spread the Net Challenge in order to purchase bug nets to protect African children from malaria. 'Every 45 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria'.

Interact Club has raised approximately $2,500.00 for Spread the Net, so far. However, in order to accomplish our goal of raising $15,000.00, we need your help. 1 NET. 10 BUCKS. SAVE LIVES.

RCMP Youth Camp

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a police officer? Northwest Region Recruitment Unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in partnership with the RCMP Depot Training Academy in Regina is hosting our second annual youth camp for students in grade eleven and twelve. Thirty-two student’s from all over the prairie provinces and the territories will be selected to attend the youth camp held at Regina’s Training Academy(Depot) for one week, August 12 to 18, 2012. The selection will be based on student’s academic achievement, Canadian citizenship and interest in a career in policing. You will learn what it’s like to be a police officer in training through activities and observation of activities including , drill, driver simulator training, firearms, police officer scenarios, a tour of the training facility(Depot) and RCMP museum, and much more! 

This is also a wonderful opportunity to interact with Police Officer’s from many different units within the RCMP, which will allow you to obtain a better understanding of what life would be like as a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police!

Shad Valley Program

Shad Valley is a life-transforming, four week summer enrichment and leadership program for students who are:
·         Talented, motivated, engaged
·         Interested in their future and creating new opportunities and possibilities for themselves
·         Passionate about making a difference and having an impact in the world
·         High academic achievement, with a passion for innovation (in math, sciences, engineering,
business, technology or elsewhere)
·         Creative and entrepreneurial minds
·         Involvement in their school and community
·         Leadership abilities and the desire to be part of a collaborative, high performance team
The program takes place from July 1-July 27 at one of ten university campuses across the country:
·         Carleton University, Dalhousie University, Lakehead University, Université Laval, McMaster University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Queen’s University, University of British Columbia, University of New Brunswick, University of Waterloo
The program is an incredible opportunity for students to collaborate with like-minded peers from across the country, building life-long friendships with some of the brightest and most accomplished youth in Canada. The program involves:
·         Guest lectures (from professors, engineers, doctors, policy makers, business executives etc.)
·         Interactive workshops, projects and challenges
·         Recreation (rock climbing, swing dancing, sports etc.) and local trips (camping, whale watching etc.)
·         Potential internships with major Canadian companies (RIM, Xerox, IBM, RBC, TD Bank)
·         Eligibility for exclusive Shad Valley scholarships at major Canadian Universities
While there is a cost to the program, it is a priority for us to make the program financially accessible, and there are excellent scholarships, bursaries and travel bursaries availableIt is free to apply.
